Barker Ryan Stewart was engaged by Deicorp for the provision of traffic engineering and transport planning services associated with obtaining development consent for the proposed Pemulwuy development.
Formerly known as ‘The Block’, the Pemulwuy development is located in Redfern’s Louis and Eveleigh Streets. Pemulwuy is owned by the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) and the development aims to restore Redfern’s “strong and healthy” Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, whilst demonstrating the significance of cultural values, spirituality and employment.
Pemulwuy aims to be a lively community, which will provide opportunity for housing, businesses and community facilities, whilst maintaining and celebrating Aboriginal culture. The development will consist of 62 affordable housing units for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, commercial and retail space, a childcare centre, a gallery and a gymnasium. Due to the sites close location to numerous universities, there was also a strong demand for student housing. This led to the proposal for the 16-storey building which will house over 500 students.
